Inspired by the vibrant marine habitat surrounding the Vancouver Convention Centre, Herring in Kelp Forest, is designed by Coast Salish artist Charlene Johnny using traditional Coast Salish design techniques.

The display is located on the lower-level pedestrian walkway on the ramp leading towards the Harbour Flight Centre. It conveys the theme of Water and Revitalization and provides a reminder of the marine life that exists just below the ocean surface.

Q’am’ (Bull Kelp):
Typically located just offshore in rocky areas, q’am’ has many practical uses including lining canoes and keeping catch fresh.

Slhewut’ (Pacific Herring):
Slhewut’ spawn in large schools in early spring, and can be caught either from a canoe or from shore.

This piece honours the importance of the ocean’s health, its impact on our ecosystem and the significance it holds for Coastal Indigenous Peoples. Herring is a culturally significant and highly sought-after food source amongst Hwulmhw (First Nations People), and ‘Herring in the Kelp Forest’ illustrates the abundance the ocean can provide so long as we live in continuous harmony with it.”
